2007 is going to be a great year for fresh movies and sequels of the very best of 2006. As such I will share my opinions on what I think will be the top 10 best movies to be released from now onward to the end of the year.
10: Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
The previous movie in this series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, was a movie split in two and this is the second half (and the final part in the trilogy). I enjoyed the last part thoroughly and as such I am very much looking forward to it's release.
IMDB Plot: Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle.
9: His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass
This is the first part of a fantasy trilogy from the author Philip Pullman. It features a very strong cast including Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green. Critics are already hailing this as the next big thing so I very much hope that it can live up to the hype. It is scheduled for release in December next year, in time for Christmas.
IMDB Plot: In a parallel universe, young Lyra Belacqua journeys to the far North to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from terrible experiments by a mysterious organization.
8: I Am Legend
I am a big fan of survival horror films, with the Dawn of the Dead remake of 2004 being my favourite, as such this film is getting me excited. The film stars Will Smith as the last man alive on earth amidst a world full of evil blood sucking vampires - you can't get much more post apocalyptic than that. I am however unsure how Will Smith will be able to fulfil this role as I still think of him as a comedic actor (although the majority of his recent films were serious roles).
IMDB Plot: Robert Neville is the last man alive. He busies himself with preparing for a nightly attack from the rest of the world - all of which have transformed into blood-thirsty vampires.
7: 300
As posted last month 300 is to be released in early 2007 and is fully completed. This will be the largest budget historical epic film of the year.
IMDB Plot: Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.
6: Sin City 2
Another Frank Miller production and the sequel to one of my favourite films of 2005. This film continues the series from where it left with Hartigans death. If it maintains the stylish pace of the previous film then it is sure to be a success.
IMDB Plot: It's one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb gray hell that is his life. And he'd give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time.
5: Live Free or Die Hard
The trailer for this film was posted recently on this site and it speaks for itself. Here at sbull.net we are huge fans of the Die Hard series (Die Hard 1 was the best Christmas film of all time according to Scott). Expect action-packed stunts and terrible one liners.
IMDB Plot: John McClane (Willis) takes on an Internet-based terrorist organization who is systematically shutting down the United States.
4: Ghost Rider
Spiderman, The Punisher, The Hulk and the X-Men have made me into a huge fan of Marvel based films. Hopefully Ghost Rider will maintain the high standard but I still have slight doubts about how well Nicolas Cage will fulfil the badass reputation of the flaming biker - perhaps a little too softly spoken.
IMDB Plot: Based on the Marvel character, stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze gives up his soul to become a hellblazing vigilante, to fight against power hungry Blackheart, the son of the devil himself.
3: Transformers
I grew up with the Transformers and after seeing a recent trailer of this new film I am looking forward to its arrival in the summer. The film is directed by Michael Bay who is the unfortunate one remaking the Hitcher for this year too (which looks rubbish) so hopefully the Transformers won't be another movie which should have been left in the past.
IMDB Plot: Dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance
2: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Another thing I grew up with and a film series which although being percieved as childish is good cinema. This will be released in early July.
IMDB Plot: With their warning about Lord Voldemort's return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes power at Hogwarts.
1: Spiderman 3
This is the film I am most looking forward too for the year. I am a big fan of the franchise and this film features Venom, one of my favourite "characters" in Spiderman. I hope it doesn't disappoint!
IMDB Plot: A strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge
